When I first started chasing the area\'s blues scene  I met Dez at more than a few Tom Principato shows
I\'ll let Marcia Coffelt & Danny Morris express the sentiment
Marcia
On Monday Aug 13th 2007, Desmond (Dez) Todd Jobe, 49, died in Lewes DE. In Feb 2007, doctors discovered that Dez had aplastic anemia, a rare blood disease. He was hospitalized for almost 5 months and finally made it home at the end of June. But his condition was still delicate and a couple of weeks ago he started feeling bad again and the doctors found that he had developed a staph infection that he was never able to overcome.

It is always sad to lose someone dear to us, even if we\'ve lost touch over the years, But there is comfort in remembering the times he made us laugh and supported us when we needed it. His humor, warmth, love and thoughtfulness are the small things that can make such a positive difference in our lives. These memories will never fade with time but will grow stronger and richer through the years.

I met so many of you through Desmond and his love of blues music. His presence in my life made it so much richer in many ways .... much more than I ever told him. I have many memories of fun times and lots of laughter with him. I\'m sure I\'m a better person for having know him.
Danny
So sorry to hear about the passing of good friend Desmond Jobe in Delaware last week. \"Dez\" was a great music fan and live music supporter in the Washington, DC area for a long time. Many musicians and music lovers in the area will miss him.

Dez was my first close friend when I moved from NC to the overwhelming DC area in the early 90\'s to join The Nighthawks. We spent a lot of time listening to music and going out to see bands around the area. He was always there to help out if myself, or anyone needed a helping hand.

A great friend indeed!

Thanks to Marcia Coffelt for the note that I\'m sure speaks for many....

A memorial service for Dez will be held on

WOW
The Festivals come at us fast and furious as the summer winds down
Check out the futures section for some pretty incredible events rolling our way.
I have to add a few words about last nights Dylan Tribute at Strathmore. A great evening from start to finish!
The finale kicked off with a second line coming in the back door featuring the Grandsons Horns along with Bill Kirchen & his trusty trombone blaring out the opening notes to Rainy Day Women 12 & 35. By the time they made it to the stage it was filled with the entire evenings performers trading off lines rolling through verse after verse with 2,000 people joining in the chorus

Can You Stoop Down?
DC Blues Festival Fundraiser Featuring Chick Willis and Jacque Johnson
This event supports the FREE annual DC Blues Festival

Saturday, August 25
8:00 p.m.
Chick Hall\'s Surf Club, 4711 Kenilworth Ave., Bladensburg MD
The DC Blues Society is proud to present the original \"Stoop Down Man,\" Chick Willis and guitarist extraordinaire Jacque Johnson at an exclusive fundraiser for the DC Blues Festival. The fundraiser will take place at the historic Chick Hall\'s Surf Club. This will be your last chance to support the 2007 DC Blues Festival. Don\'t miss it!
In addition to being a first rate guitarist and vocalist, Chick plays drums, keyboard, harmonica, and bass.  Sometimes he plays the guitar with tongue and under his legs.  Anything is possible in his pursuit to electrify an audience with his dynamic stage presence.
He was surrounded by music as a youngster and displayed an early affinity by teaching himself guitar while already having experience with vocals, learned by singing with a gospel group he and his brother and cousins sang with at their family church, and other church gatherings.
He became good enough in his late teens to begin working professionally in Atlanta at the old Royal Peacock Club, where he backed or played with a wide variety of talent such as Jackie Wilson, The Five Royals, Ray Charles, Big Joe Turner, Nappy Brown, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Reed, and many others at venues ranging from the Apollo Theater to the Magnolia Ballroom. Check out more about Chick at
www.chickwillis.com
Advance tickets for the DC Blues Society\'s presentation of Chick Willis and Jacque Johnson are $15 if purchased by August 1, $20 if purchased by August 15, and $25 at the door.  Call the DC Blues Society Ticketline for advance tickets and directions at 301-332-4808. You can order tickets online at www.dcblues.org. The DC Blues Society is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of the Blues in the Washington, DC area.

Future of Music Policy Summit: Registration is Open
Attend our 7th Annual Future of Music Policy Summit, September 17-18, 2007 in Washington, DC, where an unprecedented group of panelists and keynote speakers together with an engaged, diverse audience for a robust debate about the critical issues at the intersection of music, law, technology and policy. Details below! Registration is open now, and we have scholarships available for working musicians
http://www.futureofmusic.org/events/Summit07/
If you want to be informed on the latest debates on policy in many areas of this crazy business we call music, I recommend this conference highly.  Answers may not come out of the debates - but you will know what it\'s all about and it will help you make decisions about direction.
WK
The Program
The Summit is always programmed to react quickly to issues emerging from Congress, the courts, the Copyright Office, and from the international stage. Over the course of two days, we will focus on the critical issues that are affecting musicians and music communities as production, promotion and sales increasingly move to a global, digital platform such as:
Performance royalties, copyright and licensing reform
How changes to broadband and telecom policy would affect artists
The state of retail
The explosion of niche market genres
Technologies that are bringing artists and fans closer together
The effect of new wireless and streaming technologies that will make music more portable
We\'ll also do some special sessions on:
What the FCC\'s \"rules of engagement\" on payola really mean for musicians
Health insurance for musicians
The sample clearance licensing process
A review of major label contracts in the digital age
The technical and legal challenges with cultural preservation
Check out the developing program details here

Keynote Speaker:
Marybeth Peters, Register, US Copyright Office

Registration is Open, but Space is Limited
We\'re using a smaller theater this year that only seats 325. Considering all our past Summits have had more than 550 attendees, this means you\'ll need to act now to guarantee your space.

Scholarships for Working Musicians
Every year, FMC offers scholarships to make sure that musicians are not left out of the music/technology debate. Thanks to some generous contributions from foundations, technology companies, sponsors, and musician advocacy groups, 80 musicians are able to attend this Policy Summit for free. Musicians: go here to apply.

Praise for the Policy Summits
\"...a kind of Geneva where all sides in any number of contentious music industry fights can get together and play nice for a few days. Even more importantly, it offers pinstriped Washingtonians a rare opportunity to hear musicians articulate their concerns in person instead of relying on competing lobbying groups that claim to espouse their interests.\" Washington Post, 2004
\"...the coalition\'s organizers are due a great deal of credit for representing a constituency that is often invoked by others but not represented.\"
Washington Post, 2004
\"As independent artists develop and discover shortcuts to get their music out in spite of an inequitable and often corrupt industry, conferences like the FMC\'s go a long way toward providing them a map.\" Village Voice, 2005
\"You know the time between when a record leaves the artist\'s hands and before it gets to listener\'s ears? The Summit covers everything that happens in between.\"
Pitchfork, 2005

Since 2001, FMC has organized six annual Policy Summits to address the critical issues at the intersection of music, law, technology and policy. After a fantastic event last October in Montreal - http://www.futureofmusic.org/events/summit06/ - we\'re bringing it back to Washington, DC for our 7th Annual Policy Summit, which will take place at George Washington University\'s Betts Theatre from September 17-18, 2007.

2. Pearl Jam Incident Underscores Importance of Net Neutrality
Pearl Jam closed Lollapalooza in Chicago on August 5, 2007, but if you weren\'t there you didn\'t hear the whole show. AT&T, which had the exclusive rights to webcast Lollapalooza via its \"Blue Room,\" silenced a piece of video from its live webcast that featured anti-Bush lyrics.
During the song \"Daughter,\" Eddie Vedder sang \"George Bush leave this world alone\" to the tune of Pink Floyd\'s \"Another Brick in the Wall.\" When he repeated the line again and then sang \"George Bush find yourself another home\" the sound on the webcast was muted, even though it\'s clear that Vedder was singing.
AT&T admitted it had silenced the lyrics, but said it was a mistake by a monitor hired to edit out inappropriate language. But over the past five days, it became clear this was more than a \"mistake.”
Fans of the Flaming Lips, John Butler Trio, Rage Against the Machine, and many other bands, reported similar instances of AT&T silencing political lyrics during other webcast events. Recently, a technician on one of the webcasts reported he was told to censor political comments.
Last Friday, faced with mounting evidence, AT&T admitted to silencing bands during other webcasts. Whether this can be attributed to a big corporate blunder or a blatant effort to censor speech, the incident is a cautionary tale that shows what can happen when one company has unfettered control over Internet content.
AT&T and other big telecoms have been pushing for several years to increase their control over Internet content. They want to create an Internet where they determine which websites are the most accessible. The Pearl Jam incident points to the crux of why this is dangerous.
If this kind of incident happens during a webcast of a concert, imagine what type of power AT&T or any other telecom might wield if they determined which websites you are able to effectively access? Would they degrade access to websites that feature political views they don\'t agree with, or perhaps, ones that compete with their commercial interests? We don\'t know and we don\'t want to find out.
This is exactly why 726 musicians through FMC\'s Rock the Net campaign and tens of thousands of other citizens have been pushing for \"net neutrality.\" Net neutrality means the web remains a level playing field, and prevents internet providers from speeding up or slowing down web content based on its source, ownership or destination.

The Eastern Market Music series will present a sampling of the Washington area\'s best blues, bluegrass, jazz, contemporary, and international musicians.
There will be two performances each Sunday, a morning set from 10:30 am to 1,  and an afternoon set from 1 pm to 3:30 pm.

August 26 10:30am Archie\'s Barbershop Jambassadors (acoustic blues)
The Jambassadors are acoustic blues artists who are part of the core community at the Archie\'s Barbershop. Located in Northeast DC,  Archie’s Barbershop functions as a museum, music hall and educational facility, as well as headquarters for the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation.  The foundation is dedicated to preserving the memory of bluesman Archie Edwards and to carrying on his educational mission of keeping the Piedmont blues alive. For many decades,  Archie closed up his barbershop about mid-afternoon on Saturday to preside over a blues jam with his musician friends and visitors.  The tradition continues today through the foundation:  Archie\'s Barbershop is home to an informal jam every Saturday afternoon.  Blues musicians from all over the world have visited Archie\'s Barbershop, and it has been featured in local and national news articles and radio and TV stories. www.acousticblues.com
August 26 1 p.m.:  Bill Baker Trio
\"More than just a handsome voice ... In addition to being a fine acoustic guitarist, he\'s an extremely talented songwriter whose lyrics often flow as smoothly and as naturally as his vocals,\" is the way Washington Post writer Mike Joyce describes Bill Baker\'s talents. With musical influences as diverse as Hank Williams, Mississippi John Hurt and Cole Porter, Bill Baker is a synthesis of what could be considered truly American music.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops are a group of young stringband musicians that have come to together to play the rich tradition of fiddle and banjo music in Carolinas’ piedmont. Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson both hail from the green hills of the North Carolina Piedmont while Dom Flemons is native to sunny Arizona. Although they have diverse musical backgrounds, their musical heritage is drawn from the foothills of the North and South Carolina. The Carolina Chocolate Drops honed their skills under the tutelage of octogenarian fiddler Joe Thompson, a North Carolinian who is one of the last black traditional string band players from the previous generation.

Jon Carroll\'s First Solo Release in Over a Decade . . . Love Returns
After a long and artistically rich career as a songwriter, sideman to-the-stars, composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist and performer, Jon blooms here with a collection of songs ranging from the highly rollicking to the poignantly reckoning. Since his early days of national notoriety with the Grammy-Award winning Starland Vocal Band (Afternoon Delight) he has wowed audiences near and far with his exciting and energetic keyboard, guitar and vocal prowess behind a league of renowned artists that includes Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rodney Crowell, Dixie Chicks and many others. His songs have been recorded by Linda Ronstadt, Tom Jones and Kenny Rogers to name a few. He is a sought-after player/producer and this collection of tunes is a popping yet intimate offering of Jon\'s many sides that will have your hips shaking, your mind thinking, and, occasionally, your heart aching. \"If there were a Wammie award for \"Most Prolific Guest Artist,\" Jon Carroll would have a mantel crowded with them by now. Though best known for his work with Starland Vocal Band and Mary Chapin Carpenter, the keyboardist-composer-vocalist has more recording credits than Donald Trump has nasty things to say about Rosie O\'Donnell, or vice versa. Carroll, however, recently reserved enough time to record \"Love Returns,\" his first solo album in more than a decade. It\'s a vibrant reminder of what he does best, whether it\'s conjuring vintage R&B/soul sounds, the inspiration for \"Maybe This Romance,\" \"Take It All Back\" and several other tracks, or composing a ballad as evocative as \"Land That Time Forgot,\" which manages to bring to mind both novelist Annie Proulx and tunesmith John Prine, or coming up with a country ditty as innocently engaging as \"On the Front Porch.\"
Carroll is accustomed to seeing his name listed in the fine print, but he headlines this session with talent and charm to spare.\" ~ Mike Joyce, Washington Post.
Ben Carroll bewitches people. Sometimes singing solo with his acoustic guitar, other times with his band, Carroll comes from auspicious beginnings, the son of members of the Grammy-winning Starland Vocal Band. Carroll was raised in Washington, D.C. but he lives in New York City, which is a city he loves. Carroll performs live at favorite local haunts like The Living Room, Jammin Java in Virginia and Club Passim in Boston, in music festivals around the world and at colleges and universities around the U.S.A. He has performed alongside Grammy-winner John Legend on The Today Show on NBC television, and has shared the stage with Grammy-winner Shawn Colvin and others. Amore Magazine\'s reader poll voted Carroll a top solo artist in 2005. Lover Undercover (Luckytone Records, 2005) is Ben Carroll\'s debut record which press praises and music lovers love. Dola Rosa, Angel\'s Arms and Lover Undercover are all songs from the record which are getting played on FM and Satellite radio, and MTV and Country Music Television place Carroll\'s songs in lots of their shows. Carroll is currently recording his next album to be released in 2007, co-producing with his dad, Jon Carroll. \"A cross between John Legend and John Mayer.\" ~ Hybrid Magazine

Tipitina\'s One-Stop Resource:
New Orleans Artist Relief Effort
Until the recent devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the Tipitina\'s Foundation has devoted its efforts to uplifting the New Orleans music community through its Music Co-op Office, Instruments A-Comin\' benefit concerts and the Tipitina\'s Internship Program. That mission has changed, as we now fight to save and rebuild that very community. We are currently finding musicians housing, gigs and instruments while we raise funds through donations and nationwide benefit concerts to meet the challenges facing us in the coming weeks and months. Tipitina\'s Uptown, 501 Napoleon Avenue, will open up as soon as we can return as a Musical Community Center with a Music Co-Op, as we all come together to preserve the spirit of New Orleans.

Austin Music Foundation. The Austin Music Foundation has teamed up with New Orleans\' Tipitina\'s Foundation to assist displaced musicians. In order to help preserve their livelihood, many musicians displaced by the storm have relocated to Austin in order to find work and a place of musical belonging. It is the AMF\'s goal to aid in the effort to locate housing, work, and provide a sense of community in the Live Music Capital for these unique artists. They want to not only be heard but embraced. We are asking local musicians, music lovers, and all with a big heart who have spare room to open their doors for those New Orleanian musicians whom are currently homeless in the wake of Katrina.
Backbeat Fund. Mandatory evacuation meant that the guardians of New Orleans\' musical traditions had to leave their homes and belongings and seek refuge in other cities. The Backbeat Fund is dedicated to preserving the unique musical identity of New Orleans by assuring that the musical heritage of New Orleans is able to return to live in the city when the time comes to rebuild. In order to assist musicians in the effort to re-establish their homes and community, the Backbeat Fund will provide financial assistance, support services and resource information to musicians living and working in New Orleans for the rebuilding of their homes and lives ensuring that the musical community and legacy of New Orleans is not lost to the \"cultural Diaspora\" caused by Hurricane Katrina.
Blues for Katrina. \"Blues For Katrina\" seeks to provide a forum for musicians, artists, agents and promoters to collaborate on efforts to stage benefit concerts and other fund-raising events to provide aid and relief to the unfortunate victims of Hurricane Katrina.

New Orleans Musicians Clinic. Temporarily located in Lafayette. This is a fantastic hands on organization who has the names and addresses of so many great musicians because they have them all coming to their FREE health clinic all these years and now, they are the ones who are tracking down the local musicians and finding them shelter.
The New Orleans Musicians Clinic is determined to keep Louisiana Music Alive! It is our beacon to soothe our souls. We want to relocate our  New Orleans musicians into the Lafayette/ Acadiana community where they can remain a life force! But most of them have lost everything... we must help them rebuild their lives.
They can\'t access any of their NOMC accounts. They desperately need money to fund these efforts.

Keep Connected to the Plight of the Gulf Region
I recommend that you use your computer to check out the newspapers of the devastated areas. Out here in the rest of the country the news cycle has left most of the info behind. That insulates you to the major struggle that still remains. The newspapers of the Gulf will bring the immediacy right back where it belongs - front and center.
We really can\'t allow the plight of the gulf region to slip from our sight.
