A Benefit for an ICON of DC Culture
Nightclub 9:30 hosts the 30th anniversary of d.c. space reunion and an eclectic evening to benefit Tom Terrell.
Sunday, July 29th, 2007 • Doors @ 4pm, Performers start @ 5pm - $20.
From Mike Jaworek
In 1977 a new era began in Washington, DC.  A time when, in this conservative city, the alternative found its voice.  Pacifica Radio filled the airwaves with the arrival of WPFW and a building on a forgotten downtown corner became home to “the space.” The aggressively lower-case d.c. space  (7th & E , NW) housed a restaurant/nightclub, art gallery, and artists’ studios. The building rocked 24/7 and quickly became home for the arrival of punk, new wave, reggae, world beat, avant jazz, theatre, poetry, visual and performance art, and more. All of these genres have grown to become mainstays of urban culture worldwide.
On Sunday, July 29 the Nightclub 9:30 will open its’ door to an artistic reunion celebration of a venue that closed its doors for good more than 16 years ago. This evening promises to be a true testament to the creative spirit of “the space” as over fifty artists in many forms will create and remember.
The many eclectic artists will donate their talents to remember, revive, and raise funds in support of one of their own, Tom Terrell, in his struggle with cancer. This will also be an opportunity to pay tribute to the spirit of “mother space” Susan Warrell, in thanks for making it all happen. The list of artists that will be represented is huge and includes, to name a few:

Ajax Joe Drayton • Amy Pickering • Avery Steck • Beatnik Flies • Bill Kamens • Bill Warrell • Hamiet Bluiett • Bobby Donovan • Charles Blume • Cynthia Connolly • Darryl Burrell • Dave  Hammerly • Dody DiSanto • Dot & Charles Steck • E Ethelbert Miller • Eric Hilton • Esmirelda • Guy Picciotto • The Howling Mad • I Am Eye/Paul Bishow, Pam Kray, James Schneider  • Iona Brown • Jalani Horton • James Schneider • Jean Homza • Jeff Krulik • Jen Semo & Jenn Thomas & Tommy Osborne • Jenny Toomey • Joyce Lacovara • Juliana  Luecking • Karl Straub • King Giant • Lucy Murphy • Mark Noone • Morley • 9353 • Oliver Lake • Ottley • The Pietasters • Rambling Shadows • Reuben Jackson • Rustbuckit •  Ruthie & Wranglers • Sylvana Straw • Tom Terrell • Traciana Graves • Virginia & The Blue Dots • Willy Yowaiski
• DC Legend & "Godfather of Go-Go" Chuck Brown plus The Jazz Trio will  join avant jazz masters Hamiet Bluett & Oliver Lake.  They will perform 'Stormy Monday'.  Somewhere, T-Bone Walker is smiling in anticipation... Also, magician Alain Nu will provide entre' act marvels.  Robert Goldstein of The Urban Verbs will play, and Tiny Desk Unit have prepared a multi-media transcontinental performance.
Michael Barron will be playing from California with Bob Boilen and Susan Mumford in real time via the internet!
Video compilations of live concert footage assembled by I Am Eye & others will be screened, featuring many of the groups that put DC on the Punk/DIY map (9353, Marginal Man, Gray Matter, Minor Threat, etc).

Tom Terrell (aka King Pleasure, Tom T.) is a close friend to and an early moving force for d.c. space and its non-profit off-shoot, District Curators Inc., as well as WPFW and the Nightclub 9:30. A graduate of Howard University he became an accomplished dj (first house dj for space and 9:30), radio programmer, concert promoter, tour manager, photographer, music journalist (Unicorn Times, City Paper, Jazz Times, Jazz Is, Vibe, Essence, Trace, Village Voice, Global Rhythms…), and marketing mastermind for major record labels (Mango/Antilles, Verve). In Washington he’s known for pioneering radio “Stolen Moments” (WPFW), “Sunday Reggae Splashdown” and “Cafe C’est What” (WHFS), and is currently the jazz reviewer for NPR’s “All Things Considered.” His hand in concert promotions brought, Terry Callier, Allan Toussaint, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Chuck Brown, Kid Creole, Shirley Horn, Cab Calloway, and the US premiere of Steel Pulse at the old 9:30 Club on the night of Bob Marley’s funeral, to name but a few.

It is rare for me to write about a show that has happened but this one brought it home for me.
Last week at Big Boy Little's blues open mike (one with some of the of the highest caliber players in town) Bruce Ewan brought his brother Bobby Radcliff down and their turn came at the end of the night. Bobby while playing a slow blues went into a passage where he was playing in almost a whisper.
The place was dead silent - rapt.
It brought home to me what it is I love so much about the music of the small rooms.
Where music can hypnotize
Where it can be played quietly
Where the audience is pulled in to the performance

The bigger the room the louder it has to be.

Future of Music Newsletter #58 | July 20, 2007
Just two items to report in this edition of the newsletter, but they're both big ones:
Indie artists and labels win major victory as Clear Channel abandons effort to force artists to give up performance royalties
Future of Music Policy Summit: Registration is Open

1. Indie artists win major victory as Clear Channel abandons effort to force artists to give up performance royalties
A little over a week ago, the Future of Music Coalition sent you an email announcing a new campaign to end a sneaky move by Clear Channel to not pay indie artists' royalties. We are pleased to announce Clear Channel has capitulated – in just 10 days.
Here's the background: As part of a settlement to end an FCC investigation into allegations of payola at some of their stations, Clear Channel and other broadcasters agreed to play 4,200 hours of local and indie music. Clear Channel set up a web page attached to each of its stations’ web sites that allowed local and indie artists to submit their music for consideration, but the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) found some troubling language in the license agreement: artists had to check a licensing agreement that said that the artist granted "Clear Channel the royalty-free non-exclusive right and license, in perpetuity […] to use, copy, modify, adapt, translate, publicly perform, digitally perform […]" the content submitted via their website.
Clear Channel was asking artists to waive their performance royalties as a consideration for airplay. In other words, Clear Channel had responded to allegations of payola with a pay-for-play scheme aimed at indie artists.
This was an unconscionable action. As we shift from a physical to a digital music marketplace -- especially one in which fans will increasingly pay for access to music via subscription services -- performance royalties will become a more significant portion of artists' revenue. It is critical that precedents are not established that require artists to relinquish royalties as a condition of airplay.
Last Monday, July 9, FMC launched a week's worth of daily blog posts devoted to the topic, while A2IM continued direct negotiations on behalf of its independent label members with Clear Channel. Then, Congress got involved. On Thursday, July 12, Senator Russ Feingold, D-Wis., sent a letter to each of the major radio station groups, questioning their intent to honor the conditions of the payola consent decree. Feingold referenced the Clear Channel royalty issue in the letter, saying that the "required royalty waiver seems to violate the April commitment not to barter access to music programmers. I encourage you all, and Clear Channel in particular, to clarify this issue."
If you remember, we also promised you a surprise at the end of the week. On Friday, July 13, we filed a Request for a Declaratory Ruling at the FCC over Clear Channel's actions.
It was clear by the end of last week Clear Channel had had enough.
As of Monday, July 16, Clear Channel had revised the language in the licensing agreement (see example here). The new language removed the words "royalty-free" from the agreement, which ensures that artists can keep their rights to their public performance royalties. One of the nation's smallest music non-profits beat back the nation's most powerful broadcaster.
We want to thank the independent label group A2IM for all their hard work negotiating directly with Clear Channel on the revised language over the last two weeks. The victory is great for all musicians. It proves that we can take on the most powerful forces in the radio industry and win. It also shows a more equitable music business is possible if we band together to make a concerted effort.

From the WAMA Newsletter
The Tribute to Nils Lofgren was part of the WAMA Timeline Concert Series and was an unforgettable concert held at Strathmore, on August 22, 2004, attended by more than 5,000 fans. A DVD of the concert, "Tribute to Nils Lofgren", is now available. It runs about 3 &1/2 hours & features an 11 song (full band) set from Nils and includes the long awaited Grin reunion with Bob Berberich and Tom Lofgren along with Bob Gordon's son, Billy on bass for a couple of numbers. The show began with 25 performers, all with musical and personal ties to Nils, performing an 18 song tribute that dug deep into his extensive song catalogue. There are amazing performances from Mary Ann Redmond, Tommy Lepson, Tommy Keene, Martha Hull, The Lofgren Brothers, Bobby Manriquez, Eric Ambel, Tom Miller, Julie Sanderson, Bob Berberich, Rocky Roberts and Eric Brace all backed by various Nils band mates including Tom Lofgren, Buck Brown, Timm Biery, Jeffrey "Skunk" Baxter, Mike Zack, Louie Newmyer, Chuck Sullivan, and Ronnie Newmyer. The show also featured one of the final performances by the late, great Wade Matthews.
All DVD sales proceeds (after production expenses) will be donated to Hungry for Music, a D.C. based, 501c organization that donates instruments and provides music education programs to children and schools that cannot afford them. Hungry of Music is also conducting an instrument drive, if you have a spare instrument and need a tax deduction.
The show was filmed by John Collins and Happy Medium Productions and recorded on 24 tracks by John Penovich. Tom Lofgren mixed the songs and John Collins spent countless hours over the last 3 years, editing the footage from the 4 camera shoot. Roy Witte and Nils crew made the whole show possible by donating their time and expertise to allow us to produce such a complicated show with band lineups changing on virtually every song.To order a copy visit

The deej relies on your generous support of local, organic music.
this is what Karl has to say about the Cronyism Touresidency--
Cult artist Karl Straub has worked for twenty years to develop a sound that mixes together many different styles . Straub puts music together with an organic and practical approach, the way a bird might build a nest from twigs, gum wrappers, plastic, and various discarded flotsam and jetsam. Straub is mostly known as a songwriter, and his songs have been recorded by numerous artists in many styles. His songs are eclectic enough to fit on albums by Last Train Home (alt country), Virginia Coalition (alternative), Lisa Mosciatiello (folk/chanteuse), Eugene Chadbourne (avant garde, country and western) and many more.
Straub's old band, the Graverobbers, began as a blend of Beatles/Dylan/Elvis Costello  influences with the trashier sounds of the New York Dolls and the Ramones. Over time, their sound evolved to include elements of jazz and country. More recently, the Karl Straub Combo has combined his songwriting with a growing interest in improvised guitar solos. Straub is working to integrate the jazz lines of Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk with the D.C. guitar tradition represented by Danny Gatton, Evan Johns, and Link Wray.
Straub's favorite audience comments include: "that song sounds like it was written by a Nashville songwriter working in a cubicle," "that song sounds like something Edith Piaf could have recorded," and "I used to like your music a few years ago, but now it sounds like some weird Texas thing."
The Karl Straub Cronyism TouResidency at the Deej will feature plenty of music by Straub's regular group, the Karl Straub Combo. There will also be special guests, selected from the musicians Straub has met and worked with over the years. upcoming guests are top secret at presstime, but on September 8 the bill will include the duo of Eugene Chadbourne and Jimmy Carl Black. Chadbourne is  legendary so-called "avant-garde" musician who has recorded with the Violent Femmes, Camper Van Beethoven, Evan Johns, Hank Williams's steel guitar player Don Helms, John Zorn, members of the Texas Tornados, etc. Straub owns about 80 hours of Chadbourne recordings, and it's only a fraction of his output.  Chadbourne's eclectic and irreverent approach to blurring the line between genres was an enormous influence on Straub's music.
Jimmy Carl Black played drums on many classic albums with Frank Zappa's original Mothers of Invention. Known as "the Indian of the group," Black was and is a master of the backbeat, the life's blood of the blues, r&b, and rock and roll.  the Chadbourne/Black duo will play many styles, probably including vintage r&b and rock and roll as well as older traditional and folk idioms, and  newer jazz and psychedelia. there should be a lot of cross-pollination at the show, with Straub sitting in with the duo, and the duo sitting in with the Combo. this is a unique show that you should not miss.

Bluemont Shows In Virginia are Incredibly Great Music Picnic Events
One of the most fun things to do over the summer is pack a picnic basket and head out into the Virginia countryside to take in a Bluemont Series concert

Flaming Shillelaghs
Bluemont Winchester Friday July 27 7:30
Old Frederick County Courthouse (Old Courthouse Civil War Museum) on the downtown mall in historic Winchester, VA. In bad weather, the concert will be moved indoors at the Old Town Event Center, located at 403 South Loudoun Street.
Bluemont Warrenton Saturday July 21 7:30
Old Shadowlawn at 70 Culpeper Street between Franklin and Lee streets, one block south of old Warren Green in downtown Warrenton In case of bad weather, the concert will be held indoors at Taylor Middle School.
The Flaming Shillelaghs first performed for the Bluemont Concert Series in the 1980s for First Night Leesburg. Since then, they have delighted audiences with their spirited renditions of traditional Irish dance music, haunting ballads and, hopefully, infectious humor.  The Flaming Shillelaghs are Jesse Winch, Joe DeZarn, Graham DeZarn, Danny Flynn, and Laura Murphy. They’re multi-talented, multi-instrumentalists who never let a good tune or song get by them

Danny Knicely
Bluemont Culpeper Friday July 27 7:30
Old County Courthouse lawn at West Davis Street in downtown historic Culpeper. In bad weather, concerts are held indoors at The Train Depot at 113 Commerce Street
Mandolinist Danny Knicely will blend the mandolin with vibraphone, guitar, bass, and drums featuring Dave Morgan on vibes and drums, Bert Carlson on guitar, and Ralph Gordon on Bass. This concert will include jazz along with some other styles of music, highlighting the virtuosity and versatility of these great musicians

Pan Masters Steel Orchestra
Bluemont Stafford Friday July 27 7:30
Porter Library, located at 2001 Parkway Blvd., in Stafford. In bad weather, the concerts will be held indoors at Park Ridge Elementary School, located across the street from Porter Library.
Bluemont Leesburg Sunday July 29 7:00
lawn of the old Loudoun County Courthouse in downtown Leesburg
On the lawn of the Old Loudoun County Courthouse in downtown historic Leesburg, Virginia.
The popular Pan Masters Steel Orchestra thrills audiences with exotic island instruments, great music and dancing on the green. Their eclectic repertoire ranges from traditional island calypso, reggae and soca to the band’s interpretations of Stevie Wonder, the Beatles, J.S. Bach and more.  Originally from the Islands of Trinidad and Tobago, the Pan Masters are perennial winners of Baltimore, Washington and New York City steel band competitions, including outstanding performance awards at the DC Caribbean Carnival for ten years running. The Pan Masters have performed for Bluemont since 1982, and many of the current band members are children of the original Pan Masters.

Mambo Combo
Bluemont Fredericksburg Saturday July 28 7:30
Maury School Stadium field, located at the intersection of Hanover St. and Kenmore Avenue in historic Fredericksburg.  In case of bad weather, the concerts will be held at James Monroe High School
Mambo Combo is a five-piece band playing up-tempo Latin American and Caribbean music in a style reminiscent of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Instrumentation includes electronic keyboards, guitar, electric bass, conga drums, timbales and various other percussion instruments. Their grand finale comes complete with a “Batucade”, a highly charged drumming ritual, in a loose call-and-response format intended to encourage the audience to creative dance responses to the music. This version of the Brazilian Street Samba can be inspirational and often frenzied, particularly in costume.
Daryl Davis Band featuring Tutti Perricone
Bluemont Middleburg Saturday July 28 7:30
Madison Street in the center of downtown historic Middleburg. In bad weather, concerts will be held indoors at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church on Sam Fred Road
The Daryl Davis Band is a five-piece rhythm and blues rock band of the highest order. Davis is an extraordinary man, a great singer, pianist, guitarist, composer and fantastic boogie-woogie player. The band’s instrumentals feature keyboards, rhythm and bass guitars, saxophone and drums and truly classic rock vocals.  Davis has worked with the Muddy Waters Legendary Blues Band, Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, Chuck Berry, and other rock and blues greats. This special performance will feature Middleburg native Tutti Perricone performing with the Daryl Davis Band

Anthony Campbell
Bluemont Colonial Beach Saturday July 28 noon
Town Hill At the intersection of Washington Avenue and Colonial Avenue
Bluemont Luray/Page Saturday July 28 7:30
Page County High School
Stafford native Anthony Campbell became nationally known after winning the NBC TODAY SHOW Super-Star contest and performing live on national TV at the Rockefeller Center plaza. Campbell writes and performs a blend of gospel, rhythm and blues, pop and rock music, which he delivers in his powerful baritone voice.  Born and raised in King George County, Campbell began writing music, playing piano and singing at an early age.

One Horse Town
Bluemont Spotsylvania Sunday July 29 7:00
lawn of the Marshall Center-Snow Library at Spotsylvania Courthouse, located at 8800 Courthouse Road In the event of bad weather, concerts are held indoors at the Center.
Recently honored at the 2006 Washington Area Music Awards as “New Artist of the Year,” One Horse Town delivers a vast array of harmony singing, cowboy gospel wailing, boot stomping, alt-country/Americana, roots rocking originals, and no shortage of family fun. Co-singer/songwriters Janet Emma Garbe and Julia Kasdorf came together in May of 2000 to discover they had a knack for harmony singing and alternately penning and arranging songs together. Rounded out by pedal steel man Lynn Kasdorf, lead guitarist Stuart Martin, bassist Kip Martin, and drummer James Hayden, One Horse Town kicks up the dust in towns around Virginia, Maryland and DC on a regular basis

A fan once described The Grandsons as "American music in a blender with the lid off." This low-down tuba-toting sax-blowing rock and roll band acknowledges influences in an eclectic whirlpool of New Orleans rhythm and blues, rockabilly, swing and country two steps. The Grandsons bring with them a pawn shop of instruments. Vocalist-guitarist-trumpeter Alan MacEwen charms audiences with his sly wit and winsome original songs; DC blues veteran Matthew Sedgley locks in the groove on drums and percussion. Saxophonist Chris Watling puts out a sound so meaty and memorable that he is in demand all over as a guest artist and session player. Don’t miss this rare appearance for swing dancers’ delight! *************************

Lyceum Press Release:
Boulder Acoustic Society brings its unique brand of swingin' string band music back to Alexandria for their second appearance at the Lyceum on July 27. Boulder Acoustic's friend, Boston singer Gabrielle Louise, will perform an opening set.
Since their last show at the Lyceum, BAS has released a new CD, NOW, and acquired a new band member, Scott McCormick.
Boulder Acoustic Society placed second in the prestigious band contest at the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Festival--an amazing feat for an eclectic string band in a field full of traditional bluegrass bands. Boulder Acoustic Society is gaining fans far and wide for its energetic performances filled with fresh original material and intriguing arrangements of traditional tunes.
Here, for us, is the future of String Band Music on a silver platter." - Darol Anger
Scott, Kailin, Brad and Aaron are all accomplished multi-instrumentalists who captivate audiences with guitar, fiddle, string bass, marimba, ukulele, percussion, banjo and mandolin. Their deep respect for tradition, passion for innovation and intriguing instrumentation create a remarkable and memorable listening experience. The music is modern and accessible, subtle yet virtuosic, and serious yet light hearted. BAS is known all over North America for their innovative song writing, amazing improvisation and intimate, personal vocals.
Scott McCormick was raised in Chicago, Illinois with musical roots in punk rock, folk and Celtic music. After years of piano lessons, he felt he needed more of an outlet to express himself. He found that outlet playing at blues bars, gospel churches and jazz jam sessions. In 2001 he picked up the accordion to start The Paradise String Band with Aaron, and has not put it down since. Scott has played gigs with Max Weinberg, Doug Beach, Steve Wiest, Bob Newhart, Dave Pietro, Percy Heath, Tony Carpenter and Malcolm Banks (Earth, Wind, and Fire), and Dr. Guthrie Ramsey.
A native of Singapore, Kailin Yong is an avid crossover violinist playing a colorful palette of musical styles. Before moving to the United States in 1999, he won first prize in the Singapore National Music Competition, toured the world with the Asian Youth Orchestra, and studied classical violin performance and chamber music at the Vienna Academy of Music. Among his achievements, Kailin is honored to have been named the second recipient of the Daniel Pearl memorial violin at Mark O'Connor's Strings Conference in 2004. This award was established in the journalist's name to promote understanding, friendship and harmony among people through the power of music.

Brad Jones was born and raised in Montague, Michigan where he began playing guitar at age nine. He has studied with country session guitarist Dave Rudolph, and is currently earning his Bachelor's degree in jazz studies from the University of Colorado at Denver under Drew Morrell and Paul Musso. Brad's versatility as a musician has earned him a reputation for his ability to easily jump from one genre to another. He's extended his exploration of diverse styles--jazz, rock, blues, swing--to the ukulele, an instrument he looks forward to revolutionizing. Like his Boulder Acoustic Society bandmates, Brad has several side projects, including the Claim Jumpers and the Trad Jazz All Stars.

Aaron Keim's love of traditional string band music and jazz brought him to Boulder in 2003 to study for his graduate degree in music history at University of Colorado. As soon as Aaron rolled into town, he got a job selling folk instruments, further fueling his passion for research and performance of American roots music styles. Aaron blossomed into a diverse multi-instrumentalist. Besides his accomplished string bass playing, Aaron specializes in old time styles for ukulele, banjo and guitar. Aaron also plays old time and folk music in Songs From A Rocking Chair.

Gabrielle Louise

Boston singer Gabrielle Louise will be opening for Boulder Acoustic. Gabrielle's songs are rooted in folk and country, while her melody and delivery show strong pop sensibilities. She is at one moment folkie and ethereal, the next moment a smoky jazz chanteuse. The twenty-one-year-old musician is noted for her poignant lyrics and sense of melody. Her songwriting has impressed fans and critics alike, becoming a two-time finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting contest, and winner of the Jack Maher Songwriting Award.
Raised in a small town in the Colorado Rockies, Gabrielle made her way to Boston in 2004 to study music professionally. The stark differences between her country life in the West coast and her cosmopolitan life on the East coast has offered a great deal of inspiration to her.
Gabrielle has been performing on the stage since a very young age, having grown up in a musical family. Her father, Paul Sadler III, began touring as lead guitarist for country music star Michael Martin Murphy when Gabrielle was eight.
In 2005 Gabrielle released her first solo EP, Amber and Black. In 2006 she released her full-length debut album, Journey, a genre-bending mix of folk/pop, roots, jazz, and alt-country that displays an emotional depth well beyond her age. Gabrielle Louise draws upon her nomadic upbringing in a family that moved constantly from one small Western town to the next. Journey is worldly in flavor, featuring eclectic instruments such as the Argentinean accordion and the Scottish harp. It is as versatile and enigmatic as she is, breaking away from an industry that yearns to peg down its performers.
Gabrielle's newest EP, Around in Circles, will be released in August. It features five songs, including a version of Leonard Cohen's "Take this Waltz" that Gabrielle says she is especially excited about. Guest musicians include Kailin Yong from the Boulder Acoustic Society and fiddler Nate Leath from Old School Freight Train.

Visit Gabrielle's web page at
http://www.gabriellelouise.com/  or her MySpace page, which has includes four full songs, at http://www.myspace.com/gabriellelouisemusic .

Hurricane Recovery Volunteering
Find an organization (there are many) and plug into it.
Here's a new one forwarded by concept girl
Thanks for newsletter. I wanted to suggest another hurricane organization to add to the list, called Hands On New Orleans. Was created by someone Alicia and I know from growing up and has been getting a lot of good press.

Southern Mutual Help Association, INC. headquartered in New Iberia. Their area of recovery work stretches from Texas back across to Mississippi including all 8 storm affected parishes of Louisiana. The focus of their work is in the rural communities that were largely devastated by Katrina & Rita.
Keep Connected to the Plight of the Gulf Region
I recommend that you use your computer to check out the newspapers of the devastated areas. Out here in the rest of the country the news cycle has left most of the info behind. That insulates you to the major struggle that still remains. The newspapers of the Gulf will bring the immediacy right back where it belongs - front and center.
We really can't allow the plight of the gulf region to slip from our sight.

You are the choir.
Sing it out to the rest of the world.

Where To Hear Music Off the Beaten Path
Radio in this region is such a vapid wasteland. The spectrum - so expensive that regular college radio pretty much does not exist beyond the borders of campus (with one notable exception).
