The Mike Stephens Project
A native Philadelphian, Mike Stephens grew up in the heart of West Philly. Music was always a part of Mike's life and during his stint in the U. S. Air Force, he honed his musical skills while touring with several musical ensembles and won several instrumental and solo awards.
After his military service, Mike settled in the Washington, D.C. area, connecting with local musicians and soon formed his own band, MSP (Michael Stephens Project). A popular choice in many venues and events in this region, Mike returns to the Potomac Jazz & Seafood Festival after an unforgettable performance in 2002.

www.strathmore.org
The performers for the tribute include Ronnie' s husband Ron Elliston, piano; stepson Timo Elliston, piano; Ron Kearns, alto sax; Paul Carr, tenor sax; John Jensen, trombone; Chris Grasso, piano; Paul Wingo, guitar; Janine Gilbert-Carter, vocals; Harold Mann, drums; Bhagwan Khalsa, bass; Wes Biles, bass; Cheryl Mann, vocals; Kim Mills, vocals; Jazz Academy Jazz Orchestra; MC and WPFW DJ Faunee Williams; MC and WPFW DJ Candy Shannon; and 2006 Fish Middleton Jazz Scholarship winner Grace Kelly, saxophone & vocals.  The jazz repertoire will be interspersed with brief commentary by former students and friends of Ronnie Wells.  Proceeds from CD sales will benefit the Fish Middleton Jazz Scholarship Fund.
"We're especially honored to present a memorial concert to Ronnie Wells.  Even as she battled lung cancer earlier this year, she continued to act as a mentor in Strathmore's Artist in Residence program and helped resurrect a portion of the East Coast Jazz Festival at Strathmore in February.  Her death in March was a tremendous loss for D.C.'s closely-knit Jazz community.  When her friends come together on July 20, we will celebrate her incredible spirit and her intense dedication to performance and education,"  said Eliot Pfanstiehl, President & CEO, Strathmore.
Ronnie Wells was a widely acclaimed jazz singer and educator.  Tragically, she passed away in March 2007 at the age of 64 after a battle with lung cancer. From the early 1980s, Ms. Wells served as Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland's Department of Music. She also created the Fish Middleton Jazz Scholarship Fund (FMJS) to support emerging Jazz artists, facilitated in-school programs on Jazz History and produced the Annual East Coast Jazz Festival.
