The Rolling Stones thought enough of him to give him a wheelchair lift van to help him through his disability. Before the term supergroup was used to describe a band, in retrospect the DC area produced one of the greatest of all time with The Rainbows in the 1950's. Members included Don Covay, Billy Stewart, Marvin Gaye and Joe Stanley. Don Covay has left an indelible mark as a song writer if only for penning Aretha Franklin's hit Chain of Fools. He also is the writer for Mercy Mercy, Pony Time, See Saw and the blues classic I Was Checking Out While She Was Checking In. His songs have been recorded by Solomon Burke, Chubby Checker, Little Richard, Gene Chandler, J Geils Band, Delbert McClinton, Little Milton and the Rolling Stones. In the late 60's Don joined another supergroup collaboration called Soul Clan with Joe Tex, Solomon Burke, Arthur Conley and Ben E. King. Don is back living in the DC area and in spite of a stroke a few years ago has returned to the studio and released a CD on Cannonball Records.
