grew out of an idea: find a way to help the musicians. One of the hardest things to do for a band is to catch themselves when everything is working. Not having to worry about the expense and pressure of studio time or paying for a live recording that may not work out. Going out and taping local blues bands live in the small clubs around DC and Baltimore. Encouraged by the likes of Big Joe and the Dynaflows, Danny Morris and others. Not charging anything because I really did not know what I was doing, with the musicians knowing that the tape would not travel (no unauthorized copies) and the performers always got work tapes out of the night. A little six to two mixer (very basic), some used microphones, a PA feed, a set of headphones and a DAT tape deck. Throw the mikes out there put on the headphones and try to find everyone's sound. An SMP production. A true live mix. SMP stood for "seat of my pants" and it meant put the mikes up, put on the headphones, grab onto your butt with both hands and hang on for the ride. At the end of the night find out if you maybe got something decent.
